Gladly Received

David McPherson

When something or someone is offered, a choice must be made. Either we receive or decline that which is offered. The Bible contains various examples of those who "gladly received."

1. "And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him" (Lk. 8:40). This was said of certain ones after the Gadarenes had asked Jesus to depart from them. Many today, like the Gadarenes want Jesus out of their life. More need to be like those who gladly received him.

2. "Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls" (Acts 2:41). This was said of those penitent Jews after hearing Peter proclaim the first gospel sermon. Upon being convicted of their sins (v. 37), and learning what was required for remission (v. 38), these responded favorably. They accepted the truth, gladly received the word of God.

What about you? What are you doing with Jesus? What are you doing with the gospel? Jesus has been offered for your sins. The gospel has been preached. Will you stubbornly decline or will you gladly receive?
