Blessed Assurance

Michael Pickford

Some sincerely believe that we can’t know if we are saved until we finally find out on judgement day. I believe that not only can we know we are saved, we can also rejoice in this knowledge. I just can’t accept that God wants us wandering around in some kind of spiritual “limbo” without any kind of assurance that we will go to heaven if we die. We sing the song “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O, what a foretaste of glory divine!” But what assurance? If one believes that he can’t know whether or not he is saved, then he cannot, with good conscience, sing this beautiful song! Can the Christian have this blessed assurance? Yes! “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He Who promised is faithful.” (Heb. 10:23). What a beautiful thought! “He Who promised is faithful.” This reminds me of What Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 1:12, “For I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that day.” Paul knew! He was persuaded! Again, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.” (2 Timothy 4:7,8) Paul wrote like a man who knew where he was going to spend eternity. He said “there is laid up for me...,” and that “The Lord...will give to me on that day.” What blessed assurance! Jesus taught in Revelation 2:10, “Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” Can we know that we will receive the crown of life? Certainly! How? By remaining faithful! Can we know that we are remaining faithful? Certainly! How? By Examining ourselves! (2 Cor. 13:5) Paul affirmed that the Corinthians could know that they were in the faith (remaining faithful) by examining themselves. And if we can know that we are remaining faithful, then we can know that we will receive the crown of life. Simple logic! If you’re a Christian who is remaining faithful to Him (Rev. 2:10), then please don’t rob yourself of the joy of knowing that He will know you in the last day. If you don’t know you are going to heaven, you probably aren’t! What kind of assurance is there in a doctrine which affirms that we can’t know now? There’s no joy in such a doctrine!...No peace!...No assurance!...No rest! Do you have faith that you will go to heaven? Well, having faith that you will go to heaven is the same as knowing you are saved! Because “faith is the substance (realization) of things hoped for, the evidence (confidence) of things not seen” (Heb 11:1). Faith that you will go to heaven when you die is realizing that you will go to heaven (It’s real to you) and having confidence that you will pass into eternal bliss. Please, don’t let Satan rob you of your “Blessed Assurance!”
